River embankment completed weeks ahead of the monsoon, easing flood fears

Engineers handed over the rebuilt three-kilometre river embankment on Tuesday evening, closing out the first major flood-defence project to be finished ahead of the monsoon in five years.

The wall, which replaces an earth bund that failed twice in the last decade, was inspected by municipal officials and the contracting team at dusk. Officials said load tests and drainage trials had been completed and that pumping stations along the stretch were already operational.

"The difference this year is timing," a senior municipal engineer on site said. "Finishing before the rains means we get a full season of real-world data instead of another emergency repair."

Residents of the low-lying wards behind the embankment lost homes and standing crops in the last two flood years. Ward representatives welcomed the handover but pressed for the promised second phase, which covers the older downstream section still protected only by sandbags.

The administration says work on that stretch will be tendered within the month, with an independent safety audit published alongside the contract. Purna Express will continue to report from the riverfront through the season.
